Fall Is Here! Here's How to Enjoy This Season With Your Four Legged Friend!

Fall is one of my favorite seasons!  I love the cooler weather, changing leaves, and all of those fun fall-themed activities (especially drinking hot apple cider!).  This is also a great season for outdoor activities with your dog!  The cooler weather can make these activities much more enjoyable for both you and pup (all of that fur is just so warm in the summer...) and can allow for that much-needed bonding time.

Here are some fun, fall-themed activities for you and your dog:

1. A Trip to the Dog Park
Taking your furry friend to the dog park is a great way for them to run off all of that extra energy!  In the summer, it is easy for dogs to overheat.  It can also be hot for you, and the bugs always seem to congregate around you no matter where you go (especially the mosquitoes...ouch!).  With the cooler weather under way, this is the perfect time for you to head to the park.  Going to the dog park is not only a great time for your dog to make some new friends, but you can also meet other dog owners in the area!

2. Yard Work
Who said that raking the leaves has to be 'work'?  Sure, your dog might rather roll in that big pile of leaves you just raked than help, but it's the thought that counts!  Let's face it...chores are always more fun when you have some company!

3. Trick-or-Treating
Dressing up and going from house to house collecting candy on Halloween night can be fun for your dog too!  If you do choose to take your dog out trick-or-treating with your family, there are some things to keep in mind.  If you are planning on getting a costume for your dog, make sure that they can still walk and function normally while wearing it, and that their breathing is not constricted.  If your dog is shy or aggressive around people, this is not the time to bring your dog out with you.  Trick-or-treating can turn from a fun night with the family to a very stressful situation for any animal if they are not used to large groups of people.  If you do choose to bring your furry friend with you trick-or-treating, make sure keep a good eye on them for any signs that they may be feeling uneasy.  Many dogs will do very well in this type of situation, and all of the extra attention is just an added bonus!

4. Hiking/Walking/Jogging
Whether it is a hike through the woods or a walk through the park, this is the perfect season to get outside with your dog.  Once the weather has cooled down, these activities will be much less tiring for your dog, and more enjoyable for you too.  Take the time to really appreciate nature before the winter comes, and let your dog explore their surroundings.  I always enjoy seeing all of the changing leaves and fall colors while walking my dog through the woods!

5. Doggie Play Date!
If you have a social dog, this is the optimal time for a play date with some friends!  The cool weather will allow them to play for a longer period of time without tiring or becoming overheated, and will help get out some of that extra energy!

7. Football
You know what fall means...time for football season!  Throwing around the ball can be a great form of exercise for both you and your dog.  If your dog can't catch a football, any ball will do!  Just get out there and have a good time!
